One year and 3 months to the day since my accident and I'm now done with physiotherapy! Still have exercises I should be doing at home on my own, but no need to go in for regular visits anymore. Kind of sad in a way. But kind of awesome in a bigger way. :)
Been doing some more hiking lately. Can do 5 miles pretty ok now. However I spent all day yesterday walking around DC doing touristy things and my foot still hurts today... seems like "time on foot" takes more of a toll than just "distance travelled."
Talking to Ron before I left today, he advised against running again and instead suggests biking, the elliptical and swimming. Good thing I got my sub-2-hour half-marathon a few months before I broke my ankle! This will also be a good excuse for me to get back into doing century rides...

My last doctor visit today!! Dr. Chou said I'm good to go and don't require any more check-ups. Her cryptic parting words were something to the effect of "come back later when it starts to hurt and we'll do something about it." No time frame or anything... months? years? decades? I guess we'll see! For now I'm just happy that things are progresssing...

One year already! It's so good to be able to do (most) things again! I'll try not to take mobility for granted in the future...
Went skiing again the other weekend and things were even better than the first time! Hitting up the terrain park and did some boxes... wheee!

Earlier when I asked my physiotherapist about skiing his reply was "umm.. you can try".. a pretty non-encouraging answer IMHO. Not that I'd hurt myself just that I was still lacking strength and wouldn't have good control. Anyhow by then I felt like trying it (didn't want to miss out on the entire season!) so Charlene, Erik and I did a day trip to Tahoe-Donner (a smaller, and cheaper, ski resort). It went even better than expected! Felt pretty good on the hills and was even going down the (overrated) black diamonds! Thinking of going back to Tahoe next weekend and trying a larger resort... don't think I'll be snowboarding this year, but happy to have skiing back!
Last weekend I also went snowshoeing! Did the same trail I did almost exactly one year ago -- Dewey Point in Yosemite. It's a 7-mile loop with an amazing view of the valley in the middle. The first 5 miles were pretty awesome... but afer that my ankle got tired and told me so in no uncertain terms. The last two miles weren't super fun, but at least it was scenic! Took a couple days for the ankle to recover from that, but at least I found out that 5 miles is a good distance for me now. The longest hike I'd done before was only 2 miles.
Hang-dogged up another 12a the other week. :)

Been a while since I updated this! My new years resolution was to do my physiotherapy exercises and so far that's been going quite well! Either I do my exercises, go climbing or go hiking. Been hiking with Charlene the last few feeks and have worked my way back up to a couple miles... but even more exciting is now that I've been doing my exercises... last night I managed to (very) slightly lift my heel up while standing on only my left foot! w00t! That's actually a big deal. :P

Got up a 5.12a last night! w00t. It was well suited for my current state: balancy and technical. Hands are still super weak... after celebrating my getting up that I got shutdown by a 10c. :P I blame my weak hands...

Today's a sad sad day -- my disabled parking pass expires today!! Used it as much as possible today...

October 23, 2009
Been climbing a few more times.. back up to 10c's and feeling much more confident using my ankle. Still can't get up on my toes when standing just on my left foot, but balance and strength are improving.
Got fitted for special insoles a couple weeks ago, and now they've arrived so I'll be going to get those next week.

Went climbing today for the first time in 6 months, 6 days and 1 hour! Did a 5.6, 5.7, 5.8 and two 5.9's. w00t! Still very ginger on the left foot -- still can't stand on just my toes -- but super awesome to get back into it!
Suddenly feel much more motivated to do my exercises!

My physiotherapist, Ron, said that if my doctor was ok with it he was ok with me climbing again. Today I had an appointment with Dr. Chou and (surprisingly) she was ok with it!!

D'oh!! Bouldering in Castle Rock... messing around in the cave on the backside of the actual Castle Rock... no crash pad, spotter was eating cookies (to be fair I didn't tell her I was going to climb)... fell from about 5' up... feet sliding down slabby wall... left foot stops sliding... heard a pop.
Once on the ground there was obvious angulation of the ankle, but luckily not a lot of pain. Took some ibuprofin, propped up my ankle and started thinking.. no chance of hobbling out or having my friends help carry me... 911 was called and then we just chilled until the arrived. Killed the time by taking photos.
It was a little annoying actually, I used to be an EMT and had just joined a SAR team, so I was really interested in what was going on... but they insisted on spinal precautions which made it hard to see. Thus I made Charlene take lots of photos of the whole thing. After splinting the ankle and getting me on a backboard, they loaded me onto a Stoke's Basket and wheeled me out.
The paramedic in the ambulance was pretty friendly. Offered me some morphine which I declined (again, lucky I wasn't in much pain). He turned out to be a gamer so we chatted about Age of Conan and WoW most of the way...
